Tunnock’s Teacakes and Caramel Wafers have been among the UK’s favourite treats since 1890. After a recent acquisition, the confectionary will be delivered in a new Volvo FH Aero 6x2 rigid dressed in livery to match the Caramel Wafer wrapping. The giant biscuit package on wheels joins a six-strong fleet of commercial vehicles that will deliver treats nationwide, logging up to 100,000 kilometres (62,000 miles) per year.

“We were keen to try something different and had heard good things about the Volvo FH Aero in terms of driveability and fuel efficiency,” says Tunnock’s Engineering & Transport Manager Stuart Loudon. “The feedback from our driver after a trial with a demonstrator was excellent, and the early signs since we’ve had the new truck on the road are very positive.

“It’s a one-driver, one-truck operation we run here, and he’s been really impressed with the comfort in the cab and how smooth it is to drive. It’s also a significant upgrade in terms of power than the truck he was in before, which he is enjoying.”

    A Smooth, Comfortable Ride

The FH Aero is Tunnock’s first Volvo, and so far, it has not disappointed. The lorry has a Euro 6-compliant D13 Step E engine producing 460 horsepower (338 kilowatts) and 2,600 newton-metres (1,917 pounds-foot) of peak torque and a 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox. It is built on a 6,000-millimetre (236-inch) wheelbase and has full air suspension.

Volvo’s Camera Monitoring System, which replaces traditional side mirrors, was specifically requested by the driver. “The driver requested the new camera mirrors, and he’s been full of praise for how the system works,” adds Loudon. “Like any new technology, it takes a little bit of getting used to, but he’s only had good things to say about it. And it improves the aerodynamics of the truck as well.”

The Globetrotter cab has black leather upholstery, a microwave oven, a full media package with navigation, and Volvo’s I-Park Cool system to keep the cab cool overnight.
