Waste management specialist Gillett Environmental of Lancashire has taken delivery of two 18-tonne (19.8-U.S.-ton) Mercedes-Benz Arocs 1824 skip loaders from Ciceley Commercials of Blackburn. The two Arocs, the first of six in the order, have skip loading gear fitted by Hyva UK of Stretford, Manchester.

A Better Way To Look Back

Gillett ordered its new Arocs trucks with factory sun visors and protective grilles for its headlights. Four out of the six have Mercedes’ MirrorCam feature, which replaces the wing mirrors with roof-mounted cameras. The images appear on screens mounted on the truck’s A-pillars. MirrorCam increases visibility to the rear and side of the truck, and eliminating the physical side mirrors eliminates blind spots on either side of the cabin.

“Prior to placing our order we trialled one of Ciceley Commercials’ demonstration units for a couple of weeks and gave it to one of our longest-serving drivers, who loved the Arocs and was very positive about MirrorCam,” says Director Joe Gillett. “He was pleasantly surprised at the level of enhanced visibility, as well as the reduced fatigue he felt after a day’s work in the truck.”

    Dependable Year After Year

Gillett’s fleet consists mostly of Mercedes 18-t skip loaders, but it also includes three 32-t (35.3-U.S.-t) hook loaders, two 7.5-t (8.3-U.S.-t) trucks, and an old 814 model dating back to 1995 that still passes its annual MOT.

“Their exceptional reliability and durability go a long way towards explaining why we’ve favoured Mercedes-Benz trucks over the years, and still do so to this day,” Gillett says. “When issues have cropped up, which you’ll always get with even the best trucks if you work them hard enough, they’ve always been relatively minor and less expensive to resolve than those we’ve experienced with other brands.”

    The Mercedes-Benz Arocs

Gillett’s new Arocs 1824 trucks have 7.7-litre, inline six-cylinder engines with 238 horsepower (175 kilowatts). Their transmissions are eight-speed Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated manuals. Inside their ClassicSpace M-cabs is the desirable Multimedia Cockpit option.

Mercedes’ Arocs range of 18- to 41-t (20- to 45-U.S.-t) construction trucks includes tractor units, rigids, and tipper trucks as well as concrete mixers. The rugged and versatile Arocs line is available with a selection of cabs and axle configurations from 4x2 to 8x8.
