Gritting roads is an important seasonal task and one which requires specialist equipment to achieve effectively, with the Volvo FL series encompassing models that are built to make quick work of gritting responsibilities.
Gritter bodies built on to the enduring rugged Volvo FL platform are available used - in part because this is one of the few manufacturers to make gritters that have gained international popularity. And while these vehicles may be forced to operate in unforgiving conditions, the know-how of this venerable Swedish firm ensures that they can survive winter after winter without wearing out.
While Volvo FL gritters have been updated over the years to ensure that the engines are in compliance with EU rules on emissions, the basic configuration of this type of vehicle remains consistent in most cases. Up front the fairly standard day cab will feature an additional bracket to which a snow plough can be affixed, allowing for deployment even when the snow is deep and thick and even across road surfaces.

The gritter body itself consists of a large hopper in which the loose material is stored, along with a spreader at the rear so that it can be consistently and evenly distributed across the tarmac when the vehicle is in motion. Wear and tear to key components is to be expected. And since gritters are used intensely for short bursts during a small window of time each year, you will want to make sure that any used Volvo FL unit has been maintained properly.
The maintenance information on gritters should be present and correct, because most will have initially been used by local councils to keep roads free of snow and ice. This means that most second-hand Volvo FL gritters come with a current MOT and are generally in good condition. This does not mean that you should be complacent when making a purchase, but it is generally the case that the average state of these vehicles will be reassuring to any buyer.
The Volvo FL gritter range has kept up with modern standards for fuel consumption, safety and driver comfort. So on board you will find things such as reversing camera systems, cruise control, heated mirrors and more. While many models will feature a 4x2 axle configuration, some offer locking differentials to help with traction in slippery conditions - of course, ideally a gritter will have been sent out to prevent roads becoming icy in the first place.
Because the Volvo FL gritters are built on the same platform as trucks intended for use in construction, distribution and general urban transport, they offer decently responsive handling and a good range of in-cab conveniences to keep drivers happy. Low mileage is also to be expected because of the brief periods of use that these gritters will have seen each year, so you can pick an appropriately priced second-hand Volvo FL with a gritter body and keep it on hand for when winter weather arrives and you want to prevent this from putting paid to your organisation's ability to be productive.
