There are many versatile truck types on our roads but skiploaders are designed for a very specific task: transporting skips. The skips themselves are generally used for disposing of rubble and general rubbish and are to be found on building sites, developments and domestic clearances up and down the country. The skiploader must be able to lift a fully laden skip and transport it safely. There are two main types of skip operating in the UK and these are designed for use with different types of skip.
The most common type of skiploader is the standard hoist skip lorry. This uses a pair of hydraulic arms connected by chains to the skip to lift the skip as the arms swing in an arched fashion to place the skip on the load area of the skiploader. This type of skiploader can be used with standard skips varying in size from the mini skip of 1 m3 up to a full-size skip of 16 m3. Load capacity varies from one tonne up to a 15-tonne maximum.

The second type of skiploader is the roll on, roll off version. This type of skiploader attaches to the skip by means of a hook lift or winch. This then pulls the skip on to the truck via a system of rollers. This second type of skip, or bin, can be much larger than traditional skips. The trucks can cope with bins with volumes of 40m3 and these are often used in conjunction with compactors to take vast quantities of bulky waste. These types of skips are often seen at council dumps and recycling centres, where members of the public dump waste into specific category skips via a raised platform. They are then compacted and when full they are taken to the appropriate recycling or landfill facility.
Skiploaders come in a variety of sizes and with different axle configurations. This type of truck takes a lot of punishment in its everyday operations and great care should be taken when choosing a used skiploader. The heavy-duty work is carried out by the lift mechanism, so it is a good idea to see this in operation under full load. At this point you can check for leaks or other damage to the hydraulic system. There are often heavy loads involved and the deck of the skiploader should be checked for damage incurred when the skips are not deposited in the most careful manner.
The areas of wear and tear are not just limited to the lifting area and equipment, however. Many skiploaders will spend much of their time on rough site tracks, so a full inspection of the suspension, steering components and underside of the truck should be carried out to check for damage. Also be aware that any warranty might not cover the lifting mechanism, which might be serviced under a different agreement. Do check these service records to ensure the unit has been maintained properly.
There is no doubt that the skiploader endures a hard life, but the trucks are built to withstand this punishment. Properly looked after and carefully chosen, there is no reason why a used skiploader will not give years of good service.
