Scania R Series Trucks For Sale

3.5 Average
Rating

The Scania R Series won the International Truck of the Year award in 2005 and again in 2010, so it is fair to say that it has been at or near the top of the game for many years. It would also be fair to say that Scania has for a long time produced some of the very best trucks on the market, especially with the much-loved V8 engine. As a repeated Truck of the Year winner from a top name, your expectations of the Scania R Series will therefore be high and the truck doesn’t disappoint.

The build quality is absolutely first-class, payload is great and their safety record is outstanding. They also offer some of the best fuel economy figures in the sector.

The R Series is Scania’s 44-tonne flagship and the redesign of 2009 made it one of the most imposing and impressive trucks in the segment. These later trucks have a distinctive grille, flowing lines and colour-coded sideskirts to create a tractor that looks just as good as it runs. The changes weren’t just for show and actually improved the aerodynamics, albeit fractionally by 0.6%. Inside the cab, the wraparound dash features better plastics and the general fixtures and fittings are of a class that leave you in no doubt that you are in a premium cab. Visibility is excellent and the driver’s seat is good, but it still doesn’t have the armrests that you will find in the Volvo FH, for example.

Scania R Series Fully Spec'd

Engines have been good throughout the life of the Scania R Series and later models go up to the mighty 730hp unit on the R730. This is truly one of the best engines you will find on the market today in terms of both acceleration and sheer pulling power, with torque at a huge 3,500 Nm between 1,000 and 1,350 rpm. These engines can be paired with the Opticruise gearbox, which offers smooth and timely cog shifts and absolutely no need for any manual intervention. If you just can’t resist, however, you can switch to manual at the push of a button and make changes via the right-hand steering column stalk. The suspension setup is the usual parabolic steel springs at the front, with shockers and anti-roll bars. At the back the air suspension has automatic levelling. It’s a simple system but well tuned to offer fantastic handling and a comfortable ride.

Unsurprisingly, residuals on the Scania R Series are strong and second-hand examples hold their price well. On the other hand, you get a rock-solid truck with a fantastic engine, good economy and superb all-round comfort and ergonomics in the cab. For many, the Scania R Series remains at the top of the wish list.
