Used Scania 4 Series Tractor Units for Sale

3 Average
Rating

If you need a truck tractor unit that pulls no punches, then the Scania 4 Series should shine out as a compelling option, especially on the used market where there are many fine examples available at a lower price than you might have anticipated.

The last of these 32 to 44 tonne machines were registered in the UK in 2005, having since been superseded by the G and R series tractor units. But the legacy of the 4 Series is still being bolstered by the number of second-hand vehicles of this era that are on the roads today. If you are looking for long-haul performance with large cabs, comparatively efficient engines and respectable levels of reliability, a 4 Series tractor unit will deliver all this at a budget price point.

The choice of engines available on board a 4 Series tractor unit was certainly not lacking, and there are a quintet of different powertrain set-ups available for these models, topping out at 530hp for maximum power and performance. The condition of the engine is crucial when considering a used model, although the underlying engineering is sound, and with the right amount of maintenance these models can happily undergo decades of motorway journeys without showing signs of age. Euro 2 or 3 compliant engines help with the management of fuel costs and stick to emissions regulations which were in place at the time of their manufacture. Meanwhile, manual gearboxes chosen for these Scania units offer exceptional durability along with efficient ratios for maintaining momentum efficiently.

A day cab version of the 4 Series was available, although most that can be found second-hand will feature either the highline or topline body styles that include sleeper capabilities and thus are better suited to long-distance trips with overnight stops planned. Double sleeper cabs are available, and the imposing size of the cabs is not just about aesthetics but also affords drivers more room on the inside so things never feel claustrophobic. Instead, the 4 Series offers a spacious working environment and even older models feature things such as electric windows and mirrors along with night heaters, sunroofs and other perks.

Air suspension is available on some of the 4x2 and 6x2 Scania 4 Series tractor units that can be bought used today. Along with integrated cruise control, this helps to make the road miles fly by and lessen driver fatigue, which in turn makes them more alert and able to deal with whatever comes their way. Many models will feature a roof-mounted light bar for extra visibility and safety, while the more rounded design of the 4 Series helps to make it look surprisingly modern, in spite of the fact that it was discontinued more than a decade ago. A fresh coat of paint applied by the previous owner can help to sweeten the sale of any used example, although this should not dissuade you from inspecting the underpinnings of the machinery, tyres and suspension to make sure that a second-hand sale is being carried out in good faith.
