Refuse Body Trucks For Sale

From everyday household waste to carefully separated recycling, refuse trucks are the best weapon in the fight against litter in the modern world. And they need to be capable of putting up with some serious punishment in the line of duty, which is why you need to be mindful of several issues when selecting a second-hand rubbish truck. The majority of used models available will have been operated by council contractors, meaning that they will have seen plenty of work. But if they are well maintained and in a good condition, then they can be a great investment.

Compact refuse body trucks can feature just two axles, although a three-axle configuration is more common. Larger trucks will cope with bigger loads, but you should also consider the type of cab that is featured up front. A day cab configured to admit three or four people inside is widely preferred, because this will be able to cope with a typical crew of workers. You will also find features such as electric windows and mirrors and even a handwash station are present on certain second-hand models, which is why it is best to closely consider the specification sheet before making a choice.

Dennis Refuse TruckThe rear body of a refuse truck is often rigid and cannot be removed from the cab. Open-back hoppers are a staple of this category, because they allow for quick loading of refuse, and there may be additional features such as hydraulic bin lifts. The compatibility of lifting mechanisms with different types of bins will be relevant to buyers, depending on the type of receptacle they will be encountering with the vehicle going forwards. The body may also be mounted with a tipper mechanism that allows the payload to be deposited once it has reached its destination, so checking over the hydraulics and looking out for obvious signs of damage and leaks will be worthwhile.

Check the Compactor

A major component of many refuse body trucks will be the compactor, which allows collected waste to be compacted and thus take up a smaller volume in the rear to allow more materials to be admitted over the course of a run. The specifications of compactors will vary, along with the maximum payload of the truck in terms of total weight. Split-level compartments are available on some models, as are trucks which combine both rear lift and side lift bodies, usually for the purposes of keeping different types of material separate during transit so that they can be dealt with individually further down the line.

The presence of an MOT is a good sign that a refuse truck is in a roadworthy condition, which is important because of course this type of vehicle will likely be intended for use on public highways. Some models may even have the ability to provide real-time measurements of the weight of the payload stored in the rear, which is another system to add to the checklist when selecting a second-hand refuse body truck in this competitive marketplace.
