Plant body trucks are built for the purpose of transporting heavy equipment, which means that second-hand models will have covered long distances with heavy loads bearing down on their trailers. And because the equipment sitting on the load bed will be expensive, it is sensible to ensure that any used plant body truck you buy is in a good state of repair throughout. Various body configurations and additional features, including ramps, need to be inspected. With the strain that the suspension will have undergone, this should also be a priority.
The modifications made to the standard trailer configuration to ensure that plant equipment can be accommodated on this type of truck can be significant. But in general, you will find that trucks within this category feature two distinct elements which unify them. The first is the ramp at the rear of the trailer, via which access to the load bed is provided for any wheeled or tracked equipment that has to be transported. Beavertail ramps are often used, with hydraulic operation and remote controls making it simple to manage loading and unloading. Secondly, you should look for models with an integrated winching system that can bring equipment on to the rear. The winch may be powered either by a hydraulic system or by an electric motor, so finding out which type is present on a used model will be important before you commit to a purchase.

The safety and security features of a plant body truck will be next on the agenda for a buyer, with some models offering fall restraint fitted to prevent payloads from taking a tumble and causing an accident. Lockable tool boxes are also a bonus, since various types of equipment will need to be kept with the truck at most times, and having a way to protect this kit is sensible.
Three-axle models are available, but four-axle plant bodies make it possible to bear bigger loads and achieve higher levels of stability and durability. Check that any used model has a decent amount of wear left in the tyres all round and as a fully operational suspension, as the extra weight can often lead to serious wear and tear.
Plant body trucks feature trailers with a lower profile than other models, since the most efficient way to move heavy equipment is by keeping it as close to the ground as possible to avoid unnecessary exertion during loading, as well as improve overall stability when in motion. This can leave the trailer more open to damage due to its close proximity to the road surface. And models which have been deployed to building and industrial sites may have had to move off the tarmac to collect equipment. With this in mind you, should be able to carry out a proper inspection of used plant bodies.
Plant bodies can be sold with cabs included, with sleepers tending to be the unit of choice because of the long-distance journeys that the vehicle will need to take. Cab specifications can vary wildly depending on the age of the model, so look out for this and also check up on the status of the vehicle's MOT, especially if it has been on the road for years.
