Panel vans are a common sight on the roads of the UK. They are used across almost every industry and by every business at some point or another. For transporting goods and equipment short, medium or long distances, a panel van will be the obvious choice. They are also preferred by contractors who run businesses based around plumbing, construction, decorating and many more areas besides. With so many mainstream automotive companies competing in the panel van market, there is not only a lot of choice, but also the opportunity for buyers to get a bargain, especially if they are buying second-hand. It is simply necessary to check over a used panel van for signs of damage and consider its specifications when compared with rival vehicles.
Short-, mid- and long-wheel-base panel vans are all available, offering different capacities and maximum loads in the rear. The bigger the van, the more it can accommodate, although different manufacturers have different specifications for their panel van platforms, which will invariably sway your choice. Some firms even share platforms and simply make a few minor aesthetic changes to the exterior to differentiate them, so finding out the exact dimensions and features of each model is important.

A full-height bulkhead is typical in the panel van market, although you should check the interior to see what other elements are offered. Sturdy plywood-lined sides and durable floor coatings may be preferred if heavy equipment needs to be stored within it during transit. You should also look at the kinds of access points that are offered to the load space.
Sliding doors on one or both sides are available on some models, and these will allow for loading and unloading even in very narrow spaces. Meanwhile, side-hinged split doors are the rear are nearly universal on this type of vehicle, as long as the platform has been designed specifically for van deployment.
Smaller panel vans based on platforms which are shared with family vehicles can also be found second-hand, and typically these will be capable of accommodating lighter loads. The benefit of this type of vehicle is that it will behave more like a standard car on the roads, meaning that it is more agile and efficient than a full-size panel van. Half-height and full-height bulkheads can be found in these models, so check the details of any used model with care to establish exactly what features are offered. Split rear doors at the rear and sliding side doors are common, but top-hinged rear doors that carry over from family cars may also be specified.
In the cab a panel van can offer a range of creature comforts, from air conditioning and CD player radios to a satnav and integrated Bluetooth for hands-free calling. Full platform panel vans tend to offer seating for a driver and two passengers in the cab, along with a range of factory-fitted or after-market extras. And no matter which type of van you choose, finding a vehicle with a good history of servicing, minimal wear and tear and an MOT will be the key to long-term satisfaction with your purchase.
