The Mercedes Atego lightweight truck is still referred to by many dealers and operators by the model number, harking back to the days when Mercedes did not use brand names for their models. People will talk of a Mercedes 815 when what they actually mean is a Mercedes Atego 815, despite the Atego being launched back in 1998.
The later Ategos come in four cab variants – a standard ‘S’ cab which is a day cab, an ‘extended wall’ day cab which has a little more room, (although you’d struggle to notice the difference,) the Atego L single sleeper cab and the high roof double sleeper L-sleeper cab. The engine range starts at the 4-cylinder 4.2 litre engine, rated at 150hp or 177hp. Power for the 218hp powered Mercedes Atego comes from a 4.8-litre Mercedes 4-cylinder whilst the top-powered models get their 231 and 279hp from the Mercedes OM906LA 6.4 litre 6-cylinder. Depending on the application, there is a choice of three 6-speed manual gearboxes to choose from and a recently introduced automated gearbox.

The current range of Mercedes Ategos for sale are the 7.5 tonnes GVW 816 and Atego 818 although over the years there have also been Atego 817 and 815 models. The range of Atego rigids goes up to 16 tonnes GVW – after that the Merc Axor takes over.

The driver will find a multi-function steering wheel, colour display in the dashboard and a variety of storage areas and cubby holes to take all of life’s little essentials and most of the not so little ones, too. There are four cabs in the range, and three offer a single step entry, which makes them perfect for busy urban routes where the driver needs to get in and out often. The manual gear stick is also now mounted in the dashboard so as to make cross cab access even easier. The automated PowerShift 3 system is operated via a column stalk on the right of the driving column and gives faster and smoother shifting while delivering a less stressful driving experience, better fuel consumption and reduced wear to the vehicle’s major components.
The Mercedes Atego in distribution mode also offers reduced weight to provide better payloads and extended service intervals and a telematics system that monitors all major systems.
In the construction sector, the Mercedes Atego is already known as a lightweight contender with heavyweight features. Toughness is built into the Atego tipper, and it shares many design features with its big brothers. The chassis construction lends itself to conversions such as dropsides and the installation of on-board cranes. Key to the truck’s success, though, is the driveline. The new Euro VI engines are 5% more fuel-efficient than the power plants they replace.
