Mercedes-Benz Axor trucks with dropside bodies can be bought second-hand by anyone who wants this type of truck to add to their organisation’s fleet. The Axor has been ousted from this German manufacturer’s current range but was still a significant mid-level player until relatively recently.
This means the used models have plenty more to offer drivers and come equipped with modern engines and a lot of desirable equipment. Because there can be a lot of differences between Axor dropside models, it is important to take time when selecting one. You need to consider not only the nature of the dropside body that is featured, but also things such as the wheelbase length, axle configuration and payload capacity.
The dropside body of an Axor truck is suitable for hauling various materials used in the construction industry, which is why a lot of the used models also come with integrated brick grab cranes to make loading and unloading a painless experience.

Some used units may even feature a crane in combination with a tail lift at the rear. A brick grab can be a benefit worth paying for, but make sure that any equipment is functional when buying a used Axor dropsider, since you will not want to pay out for repairs or replacements yourself.
6x2 Axor dropsiders make up the majority of the used market, but you can find 8x4 rigid models which are even better suited to use on slippery or uneven surfaces of the kind that define construction sites. The smaller 26-tonne models are still surprisingly capable when tarmac is taken out of the equation, but for some buyers a 32-tonne unit will be more fitting, especially as this can allow for heavier loads and equipment to be handled where necessary.
The dropside body of an Axor gives easy access to the load bed, and so the integrity of the alloy or steel bodywork must be good to ensure the longevity of the truck as a whole. Things such as any catches and fastenings that keep the sides in place must also be checked to ensure the vehicle can be safely driven on public roads. Anyone with experience of buying used trucks will know what to expect when considering a second-hand Axor dropsider, but in general this range has been proven to be reliable, no matter how many miles have been accrued.
The cab of an Axor dropsider truck should meet the standards you would expect from Mercedes-Benz, meaning that the dash is laid out in a sensible way, there is a decent amount of space to store equipment and the driver will have good visibility all round thanks to the mirrors, the windscreen and the occasional inclusion of exterior camera capabilities. Euro 3 and 4 engines are used on this range, with only the models introduced to replace it getting power plants that meet subsequently introduced emissions regulations. The diesel engines are still excellent performers and have a good record in terms of reliability, which is why many people pick Mercedes-Benz trucks time and again.
