Lutons Trucks For Sale

The Luton-bodied truck, or Luton van, takes its name from the town in Bedfordshire. Luton was once the national centre for hat making and a certain Mr Barrett was a local haulier who transported much of the town’s famous products. The hats were mostly made from straw and other light materials and were transported in bulky hat boxes.

This meant that the milliners’ deliveries were limited by volume rather than weight, and the enterprising Mr Barrett could see how modifications could be made to a standard truck in order to carry more hats and make his business more profitable.

At this time (in the early 20th century) most trucks were ordered as chassis cabs, so it was a relatively simple matter of discussing the new body shape with the coach builders. The simple solution was to maximise space over payload capacity and this was achieved by making use of the previously ‘dead’ space above the cab.

The truck body was therefore extended over the cab roof and the new Luton truck was born. The design has hardly changed at all in the intervening century, and it is highly probable that the esteemed Mr Barrett would still recognise his truck design today.

The Luton truck has remained one of the most popular designs ever since its creation, and the reason for its popularity remains the same now as it was all those years ago in Luton. Quite simply, there are lots of distribution and delivery operations where weight will never be the limiting factor and space is instead at a premium. This makes the space-maximising qualities of the Luton truck a sure-fire winner. Because Lutons are so focused on the maximising of space, many versions include a dropwell to the rear of the truck body. This brings the cargo area down behind the rear wheels and eases access as well as creating even more space. The area above the cab is often referred to as the peak or kick. Obviously, this is most often used as an extra storage space, but it is sometimes also converted into a sleeping area. This is a good way for some operations to minimise the costs of overnight stays while still maintaining a decent load space.

It may seem that all box vans should be converted into Lutons, but the design does have certain drawbacks. Chief among these is the added wind resistance created by the flat front of the peak area. Modern box vans use the area above the cab to install wind deflectors but this is not possible on a flat-fronted Luton van. This means that the Luton-bodied truck can suffer in comparison when it comes to fuel economy. The larger profile can also make the Lutons more susceptible to cross winds, so care should be taken when driving in windy conditions, especially in an empty van. The Luton will also usually be more expensive to buy than the equivalent box van, so the increased purchase price and running costs should be taken into account when calculating the best truck for your needs.
