Volvo's big FH750 Globetrotter XL has raised the bar for other manufacturers. Its strong six in-line D16G engine in Euro 5 configuration comes in a choice of four turbo and intercooled units, ranging from 540hp to the flagship 750hp power plant. The new version of this engine is noticeably quieter and smoother than its impressive predecessors. The huge power output means that even a fully laden 44-tonne trailer configuration hardly has the Volvo FH750 Globetrotter XL breathing heavily, never mind raising a sweat. This means that the truck is capable of some neat tricks, such as tackling long inclines without recourse to a gear change and reaching and staying at top speeds much faster and more easily than lesser trucks. This is the type of performance that can shave precious time from routes and increase productivity.

The Volvo FH750 Globetrotter XL's I-shift gearbox is a solitary soul. It prefers to be left on its own to get on with the job and its hermit-like demeanour is a real boon to drivers, who can then concentrate on the road ahead without worrying at all about the cog changes. Volvo has had a tinker with this box and the result is that those gear changes are now faster and smoother than anything that has gone before on the FH, adding to the Volvo FH750 Globetrotter XL's ability to move away quickly and accelerate up to top speed without any fuss or noticeable effort. This truck also features Volvo's I-Roll technology for the downhill slopes and this too has been sharpened up. It now kicks in much earlier and that helps the big Swede deliver extremely impressive mpg figures. The I-shift comes with no fewer than six software programs, each optimised for different operating environments, so any purchaser will have to be sure to select one to meet their requirements.

Handling on the Volvo FH750 Globetrotter XL is absolutely superb. The suspension set-up with parabolic steel leafs at the front and air at the rear is aided and abetted by stabilisers in front of the back wheels and hydraulic dampers designed to transfer load away from the wheels and into the centre of the chassis. Volvo has patented the set-up and they could have a real differentiator here for years to come. The cab suspension has been uprated too, with vertical springs now 25cm apart, making the old yaw or cab nodding virtually extinct. The suspension set-up makes it easy to put the Volvo FH750 Globetrotter XL exactly where you want it to be on the road.

Volvo has added an electric handbrake, situated on the dash. This unit automatically deploys when the key is removed from the ignition or the driver's door is opened. It also automatically releases when the

truck moves off, a nice demonstration of useful automation. The main service brakes are complemented by an engine brake and there is also the option of a forward-collision-warning radar system, which will first sound an alarm and then slam on the brakes if the driver does not react to a hazard in front.

The upgraded Globetrotter XL Drive 16+ cab is fantastic, with a skylight, wider bunk and improved driver's seat. The passenger seat swivels 90 degrees to provide a great place to relax, with lots of legroom on breaks. This is also perfect for watching the flat-screen TV mounted above the driver's window. There is little doubt that Volvo has produced a winner with the Volvo FH750 Globetrotter XL.
