Hino has never been the most popular make in the UK but that doesn't mean they don't make good vehicles. The most popular wagons seem to be the tippers and the eight-wheel Hino 700 series 3213 tipper is a perfect example of these. Getting into the cab is accomplished via three well-positioned steps. Even as of 2014 the 700 Series is available 'new' at Euro 4 - wait until 2015 for a Euro 6 version.

Once inside, you find yourself on the ISRI air-suspension seat. This is a comfortable and practical unit, with all the settings and adjustments easily operated to find a good driving position. Getting the driving position right is aided by a fully adjustable steering column, which can be easily shifted up and down as well as forward and back. Together these features contribute to a very user-friendly cab.

Launch
Hino 700 launched as the successor to the Super Dolphin. Its cabin design is similar to the fourth generation Ranger, but the Profia is bigger.

That cab is intruded upon somewhat by a central engine cover that is a bit bulbous by today's high standards, so no flat floor here. But it is something most drivers should get used to without too much trouble. Foot-well space is good, though and all the pendulum set-up pedals are well spaced and easy to use. There is also a large clutch foot rest, which is a boon on long journeys. Visibility from the cab is good too and storage cubby holes are located under the bunk, above the windscreen and on that engine bump. The gear box is a manual ZF double H set-up, assisted by Hino's trusty power shift. It is a reliable unit and changes are smooth and prettily easily achieved without tiring the driver too much.Hino 700 Series Tipper

Generally, the quality of finish is good, with few scratchy plastics on view and little evidence of rattles and creaks. As this is a Japanese unit, though, the indicators are not on the usual left side and that can take a bit of getting used to. Some of the switchgear positioning might seem a bit odd and a host of blanking spaces on more basic models could benefit from being filled with the controls that are presently located on the engine cover or below the main instrument panel. The whole thing rests on four-point cab air suspension, with steel chassis springs. It gets on with the job without any fuss.

Out on the road, handling is responsive and accurate, with the vehicle feeling well planted on the road. The steering is nicely weighted, allowing for some feedback without being too heavy. The measured response adds confidence. Under that bump you will find a 13-litre engine with 410 horses but the useful eco button will reduce that to 340 when not needed. It is a reasonably refined unit, with noise kept to a minimum and bags of pulling power and good throttle response right down to 600rpm. Jake Brake retarders are fitted as standard and you will find it on the stalk where you think that the indicator should be.

There may not be too many of these vehicles about but the combination of good handling, excellent driver comfort and easy driveability should give it a place on anybody's shortlist.

Good prices and good levels of comfort make this one a winner. 5/5 by Don Mackie I am still driving a Hino 700 steel bodied tipped. Not the most glamorous of wagons but no complaints at all about its performance. It might be hard to separate from other tippers on its ability alone... Read full review
