Used ERF Tractor Units for Sale

2.5 Average
Rating

ERF tractor units come in a range of 4x2, 6x2 and even 6x4 configurations, offering exceptional pulling power and durability for effortless long-haul use. Second-hand models with tried and tested technology under the skin can elicit a lot of interest from buyers, but you should not rush into a purchase without first getting an understanding of the roles that these trucks are designed to fulfil.

Because ERF was discontinued as a brand back in 2007, buying used is in fact the only way of getting hold of a tractor unit that still bears its insignia. Known for offering powerful engines in spite of their light weight, ERF tractor units may no longer be manufactured new, but they remain available on the second-hand market.

Older models dating back a decade or more from the ERF tractor unit range are often equipped with plenty of comfort features and operational conveniences. This means you can find models with electric windows, air conditioning, cruise control and night heaters for sleeper cabs that make things much more pleasant for the driver. Of course, age and use can impact the effectiveness of these systems, so any second-hand ERF tractor unit which you have in your sights needs to be checked, tested and given a good inspection to make sure there are no inconsistencies.

A long MOT is always a good sign, as is an up-to-date service logbook. These units can do hundreds of thousands of miles without any issues, so as long as there is tread on the tyres and life left in the engine you need not be concerned for its future.

The heavy-duty 40 and 44 tonne tractor units from ERF come with a variety of Cummins engines, with outputs hovering between 380hp and 430hp on a number of used models that are regularly available. The choice between spring or air suspension may be something which has an influence over which model you choose, as the improved stability and comfort of air suspension may be preferred, while the affordable nature of maintaining the spring suspension is a compelling asset when budgets are squeezed.

Later models offer engines with Euro 3 compliance, enabling lower fuel consumption and improved emissions performance. Models made in the post-2000 era were built by MAN, which used its own trucks as the underpinning for this range. So investing in a more recent ERF tractor unit means that you are getting the same quality as its parent firm offers but with a different badge up front.

ERF tractor units have spacious sleeper cabs in most instances, with comfortable bunks and good levels of ventilation and visibility making life easier for drivers. A competent driver will be happy to spend time on board, with the well-designed dash making it easy to monitor dials and keep tabs on performance. ERF tractor units make for a good addition to any organisation looking to invest in a commercial truck that can take heavy loads long distances and keep the driver and the goods in one piece.
