The haulage industry is packed full of specialist trucks to cater for a huge variety of applications and specialist niches. There are the big 6x2 tractors for national and international distribution and then smaller rigid-bodied box vans to cater for regional and local distribution. Curtainsiders have made multi-drop work more efficient and skiploaders and tippers do the heavy lifting.
Even your microwaveable chicken ready meal is brought to you courtesy of a specialist fridge lorry. The major manufacturers have branched out to offer factory-built versions of many of these trucks, growing profits by extending their product range into specific niches. One truck type, however, is the foundation of them all and that is the chassis cab.
The chassis cab comes into its own when an ideal body type is not available ex-factory. The major truck builders will cater for markets where there is sufficient demand to make retooling their assembly lines economically viable, but there are plenty of specialist areas where this is not a possibility.

This leaves room for aftermarket specialist to add bodies that cater for these specific niches. The chassis cab is one product that does what it says on the tin. It consists of a chassis and a cab, with no pre-built body. It certainly has all of the mechanical components in place, such as engine, transmission, axles and suspension, but as far as bodies are concerned, the chassis cab is a blank canvas.
This is the strength of the chassis cab. It allows operators to specify the exact body they want to suit their application. It also supports a thriving aftermarket body sector that can tool up for the specialist jobs that the big truck companies cannot accommodate. There are many common body types to be found in this area, such as refuse lorries, tippers and livestock wagons.
When choosing a chassis cab, it is important to bear in mind the ultimate use to which the truck will be put. This means selecting the most appropriate cab, engine, transmission and axle set-up. The chassis cab is also available in different lengths. Buying a used chassis cab brings with it several advantages. The actual chassis and mechanical components of modern trucks are usually built to last for perhaps a million miles or more, but the bodies can take a lot of punishment. By buying a chassis cab, the used-truck purchaser can gain the best of both worlds: a sound chassis and engine and the ability to build a completely new body. With the body out of the way, the used buyer can concentrate on the core elements of the truck. The nature of the chassis cab also means that these elements are often exposed and much easier to get at. A thorough inspection is therefore far easier than on some bodied trucks. The used chassis cab is therefore an excellent choice for many operators. It allows them to add a body that is perfect for their needs and also brand new, giving a good impression of the operator’s firm. It also provides them with a solid platform to ensure that productivity is maximised by having the precise body they need.
These days there are specialist trucks for just about every application and industry. Box vans, Lutons, tractors, fridge lorries, dropsides and flatbeds are all a common sight on our roads.... Read More
