Masonry often needs to be transported in bulk, and a brick carrier truck is just the vehicle for the job. Rather than utilising an all-purpose design for different loads, brick carrier trucks tend to be specially equipped to tackle the job in hand. Before buying one of these vehicles second-hand, ensure that you are familiar with the specific features of the model and that these are in a suitable condition. Transporting bricks is a task that requires a robust build and the ability withstand immense weights, so do not settle for a vehicle which does not match the seller’s description when seen in the flesh.
Typically, a brick carrier truck will consist of the front cab, which may or may not be a sleeper unit, in addition to the rear flatbed trailer. The trailer will usually have an open top and half-height sides, although the sides are not necessarily going to be present on all models. You will also be better off with a brick carrier truck that has a fully working brick-grab mechanism on the back. Craning heavy loads on to the load bed with this special machinery will be easy as long as it is operational. Check the hydraulics and other elements to avoid disappointment, and also assess the maximum load which the body can withstand and compare this against your intended usage to find the right model.

Another feature to look out for is the presence of hydraulic stabiliser legs, which are essential when using the brick grab to load or unload the truck. These provide much-needed balance and stability and prevent the vehicle from listing sideways or tipping over completely, so they need to be in a good condition. The mounted position of the brick grab is an additional variable to keep in mind, as front and rear mounting models are available. This will dictate the position in which bricks can be unloaded and the clearance that will need to be available when the truck is in use.
Although you can purchase a full brick carrier truck, it is possible to pick up just the flatbed trailer and brick-grab assembly separately to partner with a cab of your choice. Those that do come with cabs ready attached should be thoroughly inspected so that you are certain of the mechanical soundness of the entire vehicle. Brick carrier trucks can have decent life spans, so it is not unusual to see models that are over a decade old for sale today. Modern models do offer additional advances, such as cameras at the rear to help with visibility when reversing and rear-axle steering for improved precision.
When you decide to buy used brick carrier trucks, remember that as well as assessing the vehicles that are available you should also think of your own requirements and make sure that the two elements correlate correctly. Giving used examples a good inspection both inside and out and getting warranties when they are available will dramatically improve your buying experience and satisfaction post-sale.
