DAF LF55 from North West Trucks for Northwich facility

Cheshire-based specialist vehicle company Rojac (UK) Ltd has recently taken delivery of its fifth DAF LF55 from North West Trucks Liverpool. The company, which has operated since 2006, will put the 300hp skip loader into operation at a prominent Blue Chip company.
Phil Bourne, Transport Manager at Rojac, said, “Rojac is able to offer a wide range of vehicle solutions to sites throughout the UK. Our customer required a vehicle that could carry waste material across its Northwich sites in a safe and effective manner. Based on our previous experience with DAF products, the FA.LF55 was the obvious choice.
“We looked at other manufacturers but DAF came out on top again with the LF. The two things that set the vehicle apart are the steel front bumper and the high clearance around the front and the steps. We found that other manufacturers put too much plastic under the front for skip work. Strengthening our decision was the LF’s excellent turning circle and lock making it extremely manoeuvrable in the tight spaces of the yard.”

While working at the Northwich factory, the truck is expected to transport a variety of heavy loads, owing to the presence of two key options on the vehicle.

Bourne added, “When considering the specification of the vehicle, the 300hp engine was an essential choice to provide us with the kind of power we need around the factory. Furthermore, we opted for the nine-speed gearbox. This will give us additional control when moving at low speeds, as the first and reverse gears are much slower than in the standard six-speed gearbox. This will be particularly useful when manoeuvring around the confines of the factory, especially when the vehicle is fully loaded. It has made an ideal vehicle for our operation and is well liked by all our drivers.”

New, Cheaper Iveco Eurocargo Model Announced

In a move to increase competition in the highly competitive 7.5 tonne market Iveco have launched a lower-priced version of the Eurocargo designed to appeal to tradesmen and local retailers. The Eurocargo 75E14 – available in the UK from January 2012 – has been tailored specifically to suit lower mileage applications.

The principal difference in specification is a five-speed manual gearbox matched to a 140 hp version of the proven 3.9 litre FPT Industrial tector engine (as opposed to the standard 75E16, which features an automated transmission and 160 hp engine).
Martin Flach, Iveco’s Product Director, explains: “The introduction of the Eurocargo 75E14 enhances and extends our medium truck product range and allows us to offer a competitively priced 7.5 tonner for all possible missions.
“A market trader or local retailer is unlikely to need the same specification vehicle as a blue-chip company operating on a demanding multi-drop distribution cycle. This new Eurocargo model reflects that; not only in terms of its transmission and engine, but also its price.”
The 3.9 litre tector engine in the Eurocargo 75E14 is capable of producing 140 hp at 2,700 rev/min and up to 460 Nm of torque between 1,200 and 2,100 rev/min. Prices for the Eurocargo 75E14 start from £40,900 – a saving of £1,600 over a standard 75E16 model with automated transmission.

Keltruck’s LEZ Service on Song | Scania Trucks |

Midland based haulage company, Solihull Transport, have recently ensured flexibility within their fleet by converting three of their twenty vehicles with particulate filters to reduce PM emissions to Euro 4 levels, as per the new LEZ regulations enforced from 3rd January 2012.
The three Scania R-Series, a 2004 R 470 6×2/4, a 2006 P230 4×2 and a 2005 R124 6×2/4 to be converted by Keltruck Willenhall. These vehicles were selected for conversion because they fell just outside the threshold for PM emissions.

Keltruck Willenhall delivered both on quality of work and within a tight timeframe. Neil Crossley, Managing Director of Solihull Transport comments:“We are always happy with the service we receive from Keltruck. We are especially happy with our conversions as Keltruck Willenhall accommodated us at such short notice.”

Hundreds of MAN TGX Trucks Bought by Ford

MAN Truck & Bus is providing 185 MAN TGX 26.440 BLS 6×2 tractor units to Ford Motor Company. The vehicles will be leased to Ford for a period of five years. A change of equipment package has also been agreed, meaning a further 185 units will be delivered in 2013 to replace the fleet. In total, the order volume comprises 370 vehicles. This order is one of the biggest received by MAN Truck & Bus in Great Britain in recent years. The MAN TGX tractors will go into operation at Ford’s Transport Operations facilities in Dagenham, Halewood, Bridgend and Southampton.
MAN Truck & Bus put together an attractive package that met Ford’s requirements. The attention to detail and the service provided by MAN’s sales team were factors in the decision, as was the positive feedback Ford received from its drivers. They commented favourably on the handling and comfort of the MAN trucks.
Ford will be using the MAN fleet to move engines, gearboxes and components in the UK. While Ford has been using transport solutions from MAN Truck & Bus at its German headquarters in Cologne for quite some time, now Ford in Great Britain is also using trucks from the Munich commercial vehicle manufacturer for its logistics operations.

MAN TGS SIX AND EIGHT WHEELERS FROM MV MAN TRUCKS

Kent-based earth disposal and aggregates tipper operator, Ardula Ltd, has added two new MAN multi-wheel tippers to its 21-strong muck-away fleet. A MAN TGS 35.400 8×4 and TGS 26.360 6×4 are already in service and are equipped with Thompson Loadmaster bodies, hydraulic tailboards and Edbro front-end tipping gear.

On site driver training was also provided for Ardula through the MAN ProfiDrive package; designed to enhance an economic driving style and minimise vehicle wear and tear.
The decision to select MAN was due in part to the excellent reputation and proximity of local MAN Truck Centre, MV Trucks in Maidstone.
“MV Trucks is just up the road,” said Managing Director, Martin Dace, “and we know that they have built a good reputation for high quality service and support.
“We had MAN TGAs around ten years ago, so, these are the first of the new TGS model on the fleet, and, as is tradition with the MAN brand, build quality is very high and both trucks are already proving to be very tough and reliable.”
He added, “We also wanted an auto-box and the MAN TipMatic system seems to be bedding-in well with the drivers. Feedback generally has been very positive with comfort often praised by the lads.”

DAF CF75 cements its position in Lafarge fleet | DAF Trucks |

Building materials supplier Lafarge took delivery of 12 new 360hp DAF CF75s concrete mixers. Nick Elliott, national transport manager at Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK, said, “Lafarge is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of building materials and it is important to us that we have reliable and safe trucks operating at all times. The DAF CF75s were chosen because they provide a cost-effective solution and a best-fit for our particular operation. The CF is a proven product and it is also hugely popular with our contractors”.

Fifteen flagship DAF Trucks XF105 Deal from Lancashire DAF

DAF Trucks fan for the past 10 years, trans-European logistics specialist GBA Services has taken delivery of fifteen new DAF XF105 Super Space Cab tractor units. Fully wrapped in vinyl with the company’s new livery, they have been supplied through dealer Lancashire DAF.

All 4×2s plated at 40 tonnes, and hauling 4.0m-high tri-axle straight-frame trailers, the 460hp newcomers are destined for doubled-manned international work transporting electrical and automotive parts. Fitted with AS-Tronic automated gearboxes, DAF engine brakes and side skirts, each will cover up to150,000km per year over the next five years.
Transport manager William Jessop explained that the main reasons for choosing the DAF XF105 were fuel economy, driver appeal and the quality of the aftersales back up service. “Our drivers like the Super Space cab, the spaciousness, the high quality fittings and the level of comfort,” he says.
GBA Services handles some of its own maintenance, but relies primarily on dealer workshops for aftersales support.
At the same time GBA Services is acquiring ten DAF LF 7.5-tonners, again from Lancashire DAF. Scheduled to cover a similar mileage over a similar period to the XF105s, they too are to be deployed on double-manned cross-border work moving a wide variety of cargo and are being fitted with Hatcher sleeper cab extensions.
All are equipped with 20ft bodies - an assortment of boxes and curtainsiders - while one truck is specially equipped with an AS-Tronic gearbox.
“The reasons for choosing the 180hp LFs are much the same as those for selecting the XF105s,” explains Mr. Jessop. “They offer good fuel economy, driver appeal and a class-leading payload capacity.”
GBA Services chose Paccar Finance to fund the acquisition of its new DAFs. Lancashire DAF sales representative, Lee Draper said, “We are delighted to receive this order from GBA Services and are confident that the trucks they are acquiring will make a major contribution to the efficiency of their business”.

DIAMOND H’s FIRST VOLVO FH FROM THOMAS HARDIE

To meet rising demand from the sector generally, and wind farm construction companies in particular, heavy lifting specialists Diamond H Transport have invested in a new Volvo FH-500 Heavy Haulage 8×4 tractor unit equipped with a FASSI F1500XP crane.
This is the company’s first-ever Volvo and was supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials. The tractor unit and its dedicated trailer are plated for operation at up to 70 tonnes GCW under STGO Cat 2 regulations.

According to Diamond H Transport Managing Director Steve Holding, the heavy duty FASSI F1500XP crane fitted to the new FH is one of only three currently operating in the UK.
The Volvo chassis was specified and packaged to suit the crane installation which was carried out by FASSI Main Regional Dealer, The Crane Centre Ltd at Sandbach, Cheshire.
Unfolding like the Transformer’s Optimus Prime, the crane features 11 booms and extends out to 27 metres. Steve reports that it typically lifts 20 tonne loads with ease and can easily handle loads of 4 tonnes at 20 metres and 2 tonnes at the full reach of 27 metres.
Total unladen weight of the tractor unit and crane is 30 tonnes with the crane accounting for 13 tonnes. A substantial subframe manufactured from Weldox 700 high tensile Swedish steel has been fitted to the whole length of the chassis and this also carries the hydraulically operated outriggers and landing legs. Steve reports that, despite the long wheelbase, necessary to accommodate the crane installation and maintain legal axle weights, the FH has a good lock and turning circle.

Classic Mercedes-Benz Trucks in Opening of bypass

A pair of classic Mercedes-Benz trucks were the first vehicles to venture onto a long-awaited, £35.5 million bypass at Sittingbourne in Kent, which finally opens to the public on Monday (19th December).

Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealer Sparshatts of Kent has been in the forefront of a campaign launched more than 30 years ago to secure the town’s Northern Relief Road.

The opening of the last, 1.4km stretch of single-carriageway marks the completion of the project. The result will be dramatically reduced traffic congestion in the centre of Sittingbourne and much improved access to the key Eurolink Business Estate.

Sparshatts of Kent was the first company to take up premises when the new estate opened in 1974; the dealer secured its Mercedes-Benz franchise the following year.

Chief Executive Officer David Jones said: “A lot of people have worked long and hard to secure this relief road. It was promised to us a number of years ago so we’re all delighted that it’s finally become a reality.”

The bypass was formally ‘opened’ at a ceremony on Monday (12th December) by Councillors Ben Stokes and Sylvia Bennett, respectively the Mayor and Mayoress of Swale. Both took the opportunity to hitch lifts aboard the Mercedes-Benz tractor units as they made their way onto the road.

The older of the two vehicles was a 1976 ‘bullnose’ 1418 belonging to Maidstone-based shared-user distribution specialist Lenham Storage, an operator of Mercedes-Benz trucks since the late 1940s and a leading customer of Sparshatts of Kent. The other was Sparshatts’ own 1628 model, built in 1990.

The new road, which incorporates a couple of bridges spanning Milton Creek and the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, is confidently expected to lead to further commercial and residential development, and help regenerate the town centre.

Continued David Jones: “It’s sure to bring major dividends for Eurolink industrialists during these difficult economic times. In our own case, it’s going to make it a lot easier for customers to bring their vehicles to us for servicing, while the horrendous bottlenecks we’ve become used to – it can take two hours to get on and off the estate in the rush hour – should now be a thing of the past.”

Kent County Council Cabinet Member and Member for Swale Central Mike Whiting said: “After such a long time in the planning, it is great to see the road finally opening. Times are hard for everyone and this development will relieve congestion in the town and make the lives of those living in and working along the northern relief road so much better.”
