GROCONTINENTAL DRIVERS GO TOP OF THE CLASS - More at www.Trucklocator.co.uk

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Storage and Distribution specialists, Grocontinental, has seen an increase from 20% to 65% of its drivers achieving a ‘B’ rating on MAN’s ‘EcoStyle’ driver and vehicle performance reporting tool.

The general improvement in driving standards has also led to an improvement in efficiency and, importantly, a stabilisation of fuel economy across the fleet. MAN EcoStyle ‘went live’ at the Shropshire-based company in January.

Grocontinental now operates a fleet of 54 MAN TGX tractor units, after having taken delivery of its latest units in December ’09, thus completing its fleet renewal.

MAN EcoStyle is a web-based vehicle and driver performance system, allowing Grocontinental to monitor a range of key driving parameters via on-board Telematics; harsh braking and acceleration, maintaining ‘sweet spot’ engine revs, minimising idle time and so on. Drivers are then trained according to their strengths and weaknesses to obtain optimum productivity, subsequently rated ‘A’ to ‘F’ where an ‘A’ grading is regarded as outstanding in all key driving parameters.
Grocontinental’s Transport Manager, Chris Humphries, and Driver Trainer, Joe Wheelan, attended a specially provided MAN EcoStyle training course at MAN Truck & Bus Manchester. The course was specifically designed to ‘train the trainer’ in order for Grocontinental to show its own drivers how they could maximise vehicle productivity; the aim is to let drivers have their own input in influencing vehicle efficiency, irrespective of the terrain or the load on the vehicle. Grocontinental is now rolling this out to their 70 drivers as part of the company’s CPC training.

Chris Humphries said, “It really opened my eyes on how much a driver can influence the fuel economy of the vehicle. We were driving the training vehicle, which was fitted with a permanent fuel metre, and we saw how our driving could go from the worst case of 0.8 mpg to actually using no fuel at all!”

Grocontinental has also created a text-base system to provide drivers with on-the-road instructions – accessible only when the vehicle is stationary. The system was driven through by Joint Managing Director, David Grocott, keen to discourage the use of mobile telephones while driving. Mobile ‘phones have since been removed from the fleet, and replaced by written instructions sent from the planning office.

“This is the first time that we feel that we are able to influence the way our drivers handle their vehicles in a more safe and efficient way,” said David Grocott, “We have made a huge investment in the new trucks and this new technology ensures that we stay at the forefront of the industry and continue to expand and develop our business.

Available nationwide via Scania’s 90-strong service centre network, replacement brake discs and pads, clutches, lights, starter motors and radiators are among the wide range of workshop repair tasks proving particularly popular. The programme is now set to enter a new phase as Scania embarks upon an aggressive marketing campaign to further boost awareness and demand.

“Customers today need to accurately know the costs of repairs in advance – and with prices quoted and guaranteed up front, our Fixed Price Repairs programme breaks the industry mould,” says James Armstrong, Aftersales Director for Scania (Great Britain) Limited. “Scania Fixed Price Repairs are based on the known standard times an experienced Scania Technician will take to do the job. We know those times are the most efficient in the industry and if for any reason the job should take us longer, no additional labour charges will be passed on to the customer.
“Furthermore, our Fixed Price Repairs use only Scania parts of the same quality as the original and the price we quote includes all consumables required to do the job. All Scania Fixed Price Repairs carry a full warranty, including roadside assistance and consequential damage cover.
“The net result is that Fixed Price Repairs from Scania are exceptionally cost-effective and represent excellent value for money. And with every job carried out by fully-skilled Scania Technicians, quality, attention to detail and peace of mind are all assured.

“The uptake and demand we are seeing around the UK clearly demonstrates that operators find our Fixed Price Repairs programme an extremely attractive proposition. We will therefore continue to drive the change by further extending the range of jobs covered by the programme. For the future, we will be introducing Fixed Price Repairs to our Ancillary Services business, covering, for example, tail-lifts and fridges, our Tanker Support activities and even our Accident Damage Repair service.

“In summary, with top quality work and highly competitive prices, Scania Fixed Price Repair have been designed to take away the uncertainty and get vehicles back on the road as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Truck Makers call for Euro6 Delay

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Iveco’s Chief Executive Officer, Paolo Monferino, addressing a Brussels event called for Euro 6 implementation to be put back a further two years to allow the truckmakers to recover from the recession and allow them to invest the billions required to meet the standard. He went on to suggest the standard should be reassessed, “in the light of the foreseen negative global warming aspect of vehicles certified to this standard.”
Monferino referred to the composition of the commercial vehicle running parc of four of the most significant markets in Europe where, on average, almost half of the vehicles in circulation were older than Euro 3. He called for the European governments to introduce some tax incentives for companies to renew their vehicles – scrappage for trucks.

Top Truck Bosses outline the crisis’ impact on the transport sector

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

CEOs of the major European commercial vehicle manufacturers met in Brussels with European Commissioners, senior officials and Members of the European Parliament to highlight first-hand how the freight transport sector and its millions of employees are affected by the economic and financial crisis.

“The reality on the road, in the workshops and in sales and manufacturing is harsh’, said Leif Östling, Chairman of the ACEA Commercial Vehicle Board and CEO of Scania. “It is important that EU policy makers are well informed about this situation and we have encouraged them to alleviate the enormous pressure on this important part of the economy.” Östling, accompanied by Aad Goudriaan (President DAF), Andreas Renschler (CEO Daimler Trucks) and Mario Astengo (Senior Vice President Iveco) met with the Commissioners Vladimir Spidla (Employment) and Antonio Tajani (Transport) as well as with Directors General and several key MEPs.

As a direct consequence of the economic downturn and credit crunch, transport demand has dropped sharply over the past year. Vehicle fleet operators often have a quarter of their trucks standing idle. This situation is unlikely to change until the economy starts recovering. Demand for new commercial vehicles has fallen sharply as well and the European manufacturers do not expect the market to pick up before 2011. Over the past year, they have already taken numerous measures to adapt output levels, but pressure on permanent employment levels is mounting.

At the same time, vehicle manufacturers go to great lengths to sustain investments in R&D, most notably in the fields of road safety and emissions reduction. Just the Euro VI emission requirements alone require immediate industry level investments of EUR 6-8 billion.

“We have seen recent initiatives by governments in other parts of the world to invest heavily in R&D that contributes to environmental and related sustainability goals, helping their commercial vehicle major manufacturers to keep their heads above the water and continue to play their important roles in the transition to a low carbon economy. We hope to see similar initiatives in Europe soon as well”, added Östling.

USED CV SALES AT LONGBRIDGE

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Contract hire and rental specialist Fraikin is bringing vehicles back to the Longbridge site in Birmingham, the former home of MG Rover, with the opening in November, of its third dedicated used commercial vehicle sales location.

Spread over three acres alongside the busy Bristol Road South, this new sales site has the potential to display up to 350 vehicles of all shapes and sizes, from 3.5 tonne vans to 44 tonne tractor units and trailers.

Commenting on the opening, Alistair Wood, Fraikin’s Procurement and Services Director, says: “We wanted a high profile site which would generate both passing trade and be easy for buyers to reach – this area of land at Longbridge was available and ideal for our requirements.  It will enable us to keep a wide-ranging stock of vans, trucks and trailers on-site at any one time, so there will truly be ‘something for everyone’.”
