First ever Isuzu impresses Northern Electric Distribution

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

With a payload of 3330kgs, the first ever Isuzu 7.5tonne rigid to operate in the Northern Electric Distribution transport fleet can carry almost one tonne more payload than its predecessor.
Delivering cable and stores materials to depots around the North East, the Isuzu N75.190 has replaced an incumbent DAF 7.5tonner that had a maximum payload capacity of just 2400kgs.
According to Steve Harrison, Contracts Manager at Vehicle Lease & Service (VLS), the commercial vehicle procurement company for Northern Electric, “We were always aware that Isuzu had impressive payload potential, but never expected such an increase. The added payload allows us to further improve distribution productivity, which is key to Northern Electric.”

Isuzu truck for sale at trucklocatorSupplied to VLS by local Isuzu dealer Washington Truck & Van, the Isuzu N75.190 rigid has been specified with the popular EasyShift transmission and is fitted with a curtainsided body, complete with taillift. Operating out of the main Northern Electric Distribution depot in Middlesbrough, the Isuzu has been acquired on a 7 year contract with VLS, and is expected to cover in the region of 30,000 miles per annum.
The decision by Northern Electric Distribution, part of CE Electric UK, to specify Isuzu for the first time came following a week long demonstration programme, where Washington Truck & Van supplied a demo truck for evaluation purposes.
As Steve Harrison says, ”We had an Isuzu for a week to evaluate, which turned out to be an excellent performer. Apart from the obvious payload benefits, the drivers loved it and were impressed by the comfort levels of the cab. Also, the fact that you got a full no-quibble 3 year warranty and breakdown cover as standard was another significant factor in us specifying Isuzu for the first time.”
The popularity of the Isuzu range within the utilities sector is growing, where the truck’s payload and reliable performance are increasingly being recognised. As Keith Child, Marketing Director at Isuzu Truck UK says, “For organisations such a Northern Electric Distribution, who require proven hardworking and reliable trucks, Isuzu certainly ticks all the right boxes. Not forgetting that our market leading payload potential is also the envy of the commercial vehicle industry too.”

SISSONS REPLACES FLEET WITH MAN

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

GW Sissons & Son Ltd. has taken the first two of 12 new MAN TGX 26.440BLS 6×2 tractor units with top-of-the-range XXL cabs. A programmed delivery will be complete early in 2011, and will signal Sisson’s eventual conversion to an all-MAN fleet.

When delivered, the MAN fleet will be fitted with MAN Fleet Management systems, including MAN EcoStyle, MAN’s web-based driver performance tool. Three-year R&M contracts are also included.

The company conducted an exhaustive cost-benefit analysis which saw the MAN TGX emerge as the most cost effective truck over a three-year period. It is fuel consumption, however, that continues to provide greatest appeal to the Leeds-based transport and warehousing specialist.

“In its first week,” said Bryan Sissons, “our first MAN returned just under 9.0mpg. It’s bedded in a bit now, and we’re seeing over 9.0mpg regularly. For our operation, and at 44 tonnes, that’s an exceptional fuel return – and all without AdBlue. I’m very much looking forward to the time when the whole fleet consists entirely of MAN trucks.”

He added, “I must also congratulate the team at the local MAN dealership in Normanton, Pelican Engineering. We’ve had a relationship with the company, on and off, since 1936, and during recent years they have been our sole supplier of over 500 trucks because the level of service really is second-to-none.”

Today, Sissons operates a general haulage fleet specialising in dry-freight deliveries with maximum weight curtain sided trailers. The company boasts a number of blue-chip clients; the largest contract involves the delivery of radiators and boilers throughout the UK for Stelrad Ltd. from its base in Mexborough.

Sissons is set to move from its current Sherburn-in-Elmet premises, from where it has operated since 1880, to new purpose built premises on the company’s privately owned 12 acre By-Pass Park Trading Estate nearby.

DAF puts LF Hybrid into UK production

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

DAF will start production of the DAF LF Hybrid, a 12 tonne distribution truck with a parallel hybrid system, before the year is out. This follows a comprehensive field test where vehicles have been tested for two years in the most diverse practical applications in daily use with customers in Great Britain and on the Continent. The use of hybrid technology can lead to a reduction in fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions of between 10 and 20%, depending upon the application. DAF is one of the first European truck manufacturers to put a hybrid truck into production.

PACCAR – DAF’s parent company – is leading the way in the field of hybrid technology. In the United States, the Kenworth and Peterbilt brands offer a range of models where using diesel/electric hybrid technology significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions. As part of PACCAR’s international hybrid programme, the DAF LF Hybrid truck was developed in close collaboration with Eaton, Eindhoven University of Technology and Leyland Trucks Ltd, also a PACCAR company.

EEV diesel technology

The DAF LF Hybrid uses a parallel diesel/electric hybrid system, where the truck is driven by the diesel engine, the electric engine or a combination of both. The truck is fitted with the 4.5-litre PACCAR FR diesel engine, which complies with the ultra-low EEV emission requirements as standard, without a soot filter. In the LF Hybrid, this engine produces a maximum power of 118 kW/160 hp and is linked to an automatic Eaton six-speed gearbox (Autoshift).

An electric motor has been installed between the clutch and the gearbox, which can provide drive as well as functioning as a generator. Energy released during braking is stored in the lithium-ion batteries and reused when accelerating. Depending on the degree of charge of these lithium-ion batteries, a central computer determines when the diesel engine provides the drive and when and to what extent the electric motor is used.

Lithium-ion batteries

The battery pack for the hybrid system weighs around 100 kilos and consists of ninety-six 3.4 Volt cells. When these batteries are fully charged, the LF Hybrid truck can travel about two kilometres electrically without needing the diesel engine to drive it. In practice, this is enough to drive in and out of the “green zones“ in city centres. In these types of circumstances, the diesel engine also runs at idle in order to drive various components (such as the steering pump and the air compressor). The LF Hybrid is also fitted with a start/stop system.

In addition to the battery pack, DAF hybrid technology consists of a current transformer that converts the alternating current supplied by the generator to direct current for the batteries. A cooling unit is also fitted to the chassis to cool this current transformer. The DAF LF45.160 Hybrid is only 300 kilograms heavier in total than the standard model with a diesel engine alone. Because the DAF LF series is famous for its favourable unladen weight, the 12-tonne LF Hybrid nevertheless offers a very useful load capacity of around 7.5 tonnes.

Field test demonstrates reliability

As is DAF standard practice, the development programme for the LF Hybrid was concluded with a comprehensive field test. In addition to extensive test programmes ten vehicles were used to gain practical experience by customers in Great Britain and on the Continent for a range of distribution applications over a two-year period. First and foremost, the field test demonstrated the reliability of DAF hybrid technology but also - depending on the application - that savings in fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions of between 10 and 20% were achieved.

Another advantage of hybrid technology is that components susceptible to wear, such as brake linings and the clutch plate, will have a longer service life because braking occurs on the electric motor.

Operational lease

DAF is starting to supply the LF Hybrid in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium; countries where market research has shown that the interest in hybrid vehicles is highest. Depending on the success of the LF Hybrid in these markets, DAF will decide whether to include the vehicle in the standard product range in other countries.

Hybrid technology will be developed further in the next few years, particularly when it comes to the batteries. This is why the DAF LF Hybrid is offered as standard via PACCAR Financial with a full operational lease contract, so that the DAF dealer can implement any potential updates during the contract term. This ensures that transport operators always have the most environmentally friendly vehicles for a fixed price per month.

Mercedes-Benz Head Office Raided by OFT

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

The Office of Fair Trade (OFT) is investigating “suspected cartel activity” involving leading truck manufacturers in Britain.

The Mercedes-Benz offices in Milton Keynes have been raided as part of the investigation, said an OFT spokesman, and one person has been detained in connection with the case has since been released on police bail.

The OFT said in a statement that investigations are at an early stage and it has not yet concluded whether the law has been broken.

MAN says that it has received an information request from the regulator, while Scania said it was also under investigation and was assisting the OFT, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the news.

Volvo Trucks issued the following statement, “Volvo Trucks and Renault Trucks’ UK subsidiaries have, together with a number of other international truck companies, become the subject of an investigation initiated by the OFT. Volvo Trucks’ and Renault Trucks’ British subsidiaries have received letters from the OFT as part of the investigation and will co-operate fully with the OFT during the course of the forthcoming investigative work. At present, the Volvo Group has no further comments on this matter.”

Mercedes have released the following statement: “Mercedes-Benz UK can confirm that the OFT visited its Tongwell offices as part of its investigations into the UK commercial vehicle market. In that context the OFT carried out an on-site investigation at its offices. Of course Mercedes-Benz is fully cooperating with the investigation which may take many months or more to complete.” Scania were not immediately reachable for comment.

Under OFT rules, companies involved in price-fixing can be fined up to 10 percent of their annual turnover and executives face the threat of prosecution and a maximum jail term of five years.

Actros Edition exterior: a superlative truck
Take a look at the exterior of the Actros Edition, and it is immediately clear that this is a superlative truck: available with diamond white (Actros White Liner) or obsidian black (Actros Black Liner) paintwork, each cab features a broad, vertical double stripe in elegant grey. The distinctive look is underlined by exterior mirror trim with chrome details (Actros Black Liner) or painted in white (Actros White Liner), steps in stainless steel (Actros Black Liner) or with a black paint finish (Actros White Liner), headlamp trim in black (Actros White Liner) or chrome (Actros Black Liner), LED daytime driving lights and LED position lights. The interior proves to be a genuine driver’s dream. The brown climate-controlled leather seats and leather door panels with special topstitching, the leather steering wheel and leather armrests create an exclusive atmosphere. Other leather features include the centre floor mat and the mat in the open stowage tray on top of the instrument panel. The already extensive standard equipment for the Actros is enhanced in the Actros Edition Black Liner and White Liner with features such as Active Brake Assist 2 (also known as emergency braking assist) which also recognises stationary obstacles, Lane Assistant, stability control, and the driver’s airbag. Retarder and proximity control are available as an option. Air deflectors with cab-side extenders and aerodynamic side trim panels further lower the already favourable fuel consumption. A pre-installation for the FleetBoard telematics is also already on board.

Mercedes-Benz delivers the Actros Edition Black Liner and White Liner in conjunction with L-cab and Megaspace cab and all engine variants. The number of trucks being produced is as exclusive as the equipment: the Edition is limited to 500 vehicles.

The Mercedes-Benz Actros Edition will make its debut at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover at the end of September.

Iveco EEV initiative pays off

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Iveco reports that interest in Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicle standards is growing. The firm says that since February last year, when it was the first truck maker to offer Euro 5 and EEV standards across its full truck range up to 500 hp, more operators are asking for vehicles with stricter than minimum emission standards. That growing interest in EEV and similar standards is connected to the growth in subsidies for vehicles with emissions performance ahead of the minimum standards and potential for better residual values that they may offer. Sadly the UK seems reluctant to encourage operators to do more than the minimum as far as emissions are concerned.

Trailer height limit on the horizon

Friday, September 10th, 2010

We have learned that bureaucrats in Brussels may limit heights to four metres. The idea comes from the European Commission and would include a four metre height limit in the European Whole Vehicle Type Approval parameters for trailers and semi-trailers. It could affect all vehicles built and sold across the EU. Detailed plans are expected to be published before September. “If this makes its way onto the statute book it will limit high cubic capacity double-deck trailers and hump-backed trailers,” said Robin Dickeson, manager, commercial vehicle affairs at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. This could push up costs, as some operators would need more trailers to for a job than they use today. “Expect anguish.”

First ever Isuzu joins TWT Logistics Group fleet

Friday, September 10th, 2010

TWT Logistics operates a diverse fleet of 80 plus vehicles and 150 trailers to meet the needs of its customer base, however recently the Mid Glamorgan based company took delivery of its first ever Isuzu truck to work on pallet deliveries as part of the group’s pallet distribution network.

TWT’s first ever Isuzu N75.190 7.5tonne long wheelbase rigid joined the fleet earlier this year, based from their Andover depot, Switch International, which was purchased 4 years ago.

The Isuzu N75.190 Euro 5 rigid has been specified with the popular Easyshift transmission and has a 20ft curtainsided body with tuckaway taillift fitted as standard. TWT anticipates that the Isuzu, which was supplied by Isuzu Thames Valley, will cover in excess of 100,000kms per annum over a six year working life.

As Trevor Taylor, Managing Director at TWT Logistics Group explains, “We attended the SED show last year, spoke to Isuzu on their stand and their response was first class. After the show, Isuzu came to us to explain about the full range of trucks they sell, and we were invited to test their demo trucks at various weights.”

Not long after, TWT Logistics needed to add a further 7.5tonner to its fleet and decided to specify its first ever Isuzu, a decision that pleased Trevor Taylor. He comments, “Isuzu worked hard to impress us with their total package and fully deserved this opportunity to supply us with a new vehicle. Needless to say, the vehicle has slipped effortlessly into our pallet distribution fleet, performing well so far.”
